California was first linked to the East Coast by ‘fast’ transportation 150 years ago

A century and a half ago today, a golden spike was driven into a railroad crosstie at Promontory, Utah, which completed the first rail link across the United States.

Travel time from the East Coast to the nation’s 19-year-old state of California was slashed from months to six days.
