Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner runs from San Luis Obispo northwest of Los Angeles, through LA itself, all the way down the coast to San Diego. Much of the route is along the coast, with gorgeous views of the ocean, and if you time it right, some pretty epic sunsets over the sea.
It’s terrible. I’ve ridden trains in dozens of countries all over the world. If you add up all the minutes and hours I’ve been delayed on every single one of those trains, it’s still a tiny fraction of the time I’ve lost stuck or stranded on the dozen or so times I’ve ridden the Surfliner. A trip that should take under 4 hours could easily take double that. And that’s if you get to your destination at all.
