Bay Area officials appear to have wisely pulled the emergency brake on an ill-timed bureaucratic dispute that threatened Caltrain’s solvency, tentatively agreeing to give voters a chance to approve a modest but crucial sales tax for the commuter rail.
The turf war, which was days away from claiming the November ballot measure and perhaps Caltrain’s continued operations as casualties, was no showcase of local statesmanship. But a cadre of officials from San Francisco, Santa Clara County and San Mateo County deserve credit for cobbling together a truce before it was too late.
