The Daily CSX: CSX pays millions for groundwater contamination after derailment

CSX Corp. (Nasdaq: CSX) reached a settlement Tuesday with U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and State of West Virginia that requires it to pay $2.2 million – $1.2 million to the U.S. and $1 million to West Virginia.

The settlement decided liability for an incident that occurred in West Virginia in 2015. On Feb. 16, 27 railcars of a CSX train carrying 3.1 million gallons of crude oil derailed in Mt. Carbon. The railcars leaked 378,000 gallons of crude oil, some of which caught fire and the remainder of which spewed into nearby waterways. A home near the derailment was destroyed in the blaze, which lasted 30 hours. The oil caused groundwater and soil contamination in the surrounding area. About 300 people were forced to evacuate; no one was killed.
