T-REX: New plan to integrate three dinosaur New York City regional commuter rail providers into single, multi-state system

A new report from the Regional Plan Association (RPA) calls for the merging of New York Metropolitan Area commuter railroads MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit into a single, integrated network called T-REX, for Trans-Regional Express.

RPA says the $71 billion overhaul to integrate the three legacy systems would be implemented in three phases over several decades and would result in increased capacity, expanded options and reduced travel times.
