Rail passengers may soon be able to choose which train company they use for their journeys under new plans that will allow rival services on the same routes.
The regulator says this will benefit customers by lowering fares, improving service and encouraging innovation, and experts believe it could have a similar effect to that budget airlines had on the air industry.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is introducing the changes from April 2019 and will allow different train operators to run competing services on the same lines, provided they pay a bigger share of costs for the upkeep of the rail network.
