New Jersey Transit, facing shortage, is slow to train locomotive engineers

NJ Transit takes longer to train locomotive engineers than any of its peer transit agencies in the region, even when the job candidates have experience running trains.

That means as many as 10 NJ Transit engineers who left this year to work for New York’s Metro-North will be able to run trains after 10 months of training, while two engineers NJ Transit recently hired from CSX will take twice as long to enter service.
