Galesburg, Illinois officials worried about rail tourism

GALESBURG — Amtrak’s decision to eliminate most private rail service on its lines impacted Galesburg late last month, and local tourism officials are concerned about what that could signify for the future.

Two special trains cancelled trips to Galesburg as a result of a policy Amtrak implemented March 28 to no longer operate charter service and special trains, with the exception of when Ameren needs to run private rail to test “specific strategic initiatives,” according to a March 28 letter from Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson. Both trains would have included riders who have been coming to Galesburg for many years.
