Central Florida: Volusia, SunRail leaders spar in Orlando

ORLANDO — Volusia County officials have been waiting a year for more than just assurances that their taxpayers won’t get stuck paying for a commuter train that may never run — and they’ll have to wait even longer after a SunRail Commission meeting Thursday that got uncomfortably heated at times.

With no SunRail stop in DeLand — despite its promise in the original contract — and a 2021 deadline fast approaching when the project’s local partners will begin assuming all the costs, Volusia leaders have been seeking assurances in writing that they won’t have to pay to maintain the track between DeLand and DeBary, currently the northernmost stop.
