Boston: How a judge’s son got to be a commuter rail engineer despite multiple drunken driving charges

He was so drunk that August night in 2012 that his girlfriend begged him to let her out of the car. Instead, Robert Ronquillo III drove onuntil his gray BMW veered up onto the sidewalk of Commonwealth Avenue and smashed into a parked car, a witness told police. Then, he drove off, but police found him a few blocks away, passed out in the driver’s seat with the engine still running.

Within days, Ronquillo went back to work — learning to drive trains for the MBTA commuter rail. The next month, he was certified as a professional train engineer.
