Amtrak Downeaster crew didn’t know train struck car in Newton, New Hampshire killing driver, say police

NEWTON – Personnel aboard Amtrak’s Downeaster were unaware the train slammed into a car on the tracks and killed the driver in a crash at the West Main Street railroad crossing Sunday night, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by police, Amtrak and railroad officials, but Newton police Sgt. Cory Drouin said Monday that the train continued southbound into Haverhill, Mass., because no one knew that the Toyota Tercel had been struck and pushed hundreds of feet down the tracks.
