Amtrak is anticipating one of the busiest weeks of the year on its Pacific Surfliner route as people take the train south to San Diego Comic-Con and is adding personnel and extra cars — about 9,500 additional seats — to accommodate the increased demand. The rail line will boost the size of its trains by 14 cars from Wednesday, July 17 through Sunday, July 21.
More than 160,000 attend Comic-Con each year and some of those visitors travel by rail to avoid traffic and parking headaches. Last year, according to Amtrak, the Pacific Surfliner carried more than 44,000 passengers to destinations between San Diego and San Luis Obispo during Comic-Con, a 40 percent increase over its average ridership.
