California Bay Area: SMART makes it through fire devastation, ties communities together

As they leave an operations center in Santa Rosa on their way south to Marin this week, SMART trains pass through an eerily desolate and smoky landscape ravaged by fire.

“It’s devastated. Devastated,” said Scott Mitchell, an engineer-conductor on the rail line, as a train rolled north Thursday morning, cutting through smoke that has enveloped the North Bay. “I’m from Missouri and I have never seen anything like that.”
