E. Hunter Harrison spent a lifetime in railroading. From his teenage days as a car oilman to his final days as CEO of CSX Corp. (Nasdaq: CSX), Harrison challenged the conventional ways of doing business as a railroad. In a new book, Canadian journalist Howard Green chronicles the life and career of the controversial executive, who was responsible for major transformations at several of North America’s biggest railroads.
Green, a broadcast journalist for 33 years and founding anchor of Canada’s Business News Network, had deep access to Harrison, his family and his coworkers in writing “Railroader: The Unfiltered Genius and Controversy of Four-Time CEO Hunter Harrison.” The book begins with Harrison’s rowdy days growing up in Memphis and stretches through Harrison’s time at CSX, a tenure ended by his death in December 2017.
