A welder working on CSX track in South Carolina was struck and killed by a train Friday at 10:30 a.m., according to a person familiar with the situation who asked not to be named. The incident occurred between Ellis and Gifford, South Carolina.
The fatality comes in the same month as two derailments that occurred on back-to-back weekends in central Georgia; no injuries or spills were reported in either derailment. The events highlight safety problems that have plagued an otherwise robust operational turnaround at the Jacksonville-based railroad.
