CSX Corp. (Nasdaq: CSX) CEO E. Hunter Harrison brought fast-paced change to the Jacksonville-based railroad as soon as he started in March. The industry veteran laid off thousands of employees and contractors, closed nine hump yards, relocated divisions and shook up his executive team, all in pursuit of efficiency. In that pursuit, he achieved higher train velocities, lower dwell times and a better operating ratio.
The 73-year-old railroader was renowned for turnarounds at Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway, and shareholders were confident he could accomplish another turnaround at CSX. Harrison succumbed to an illness Dec. 16, just two days after taking an unplanned medical leave.
