The decision to explore alternatives to the South Shore Line’s plans to cut a new route through a South Bend neighborhood was the right one — the only one — to make.
Plans to cut a new route through the Ardmore area would displace up to 40 households in order to shave time from the Chicago-to-South Bend trip, part of a larger project to reduce the trip from from 2½ hours to 90 minutes. Understandably, this didn’t go over well with those whose homes and lives would be affected, as well as with other members of the public who saw it as unfair and unnecessary.
