TRACKING AMTRAK’S LONG DISTANCE DEBATE: Montana’s two senators are pushing Amtrak for answers about the future of its long-distance passenger trains, the Flathead Beacon reports. As the story says, 11 lawmakers from both parties wrote to Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson asking for information about the company’s routes and revenues. The letter is the latest volley in the recurrent debate about Amtrak’s money-losing long-distance routes. The Trump administration has proposed cutting Amtrak’s funding and pushing more of the burden onto states.
Montana’s lawmakers are particularly concerned about the Empire Builder route, which stops in parts of the state.
