Plan to remove sharp curve where Amtrak train derailed scrapped for cost reasons

The original plans for the Point Defiance railroad bypass called for the elimination of the sharp curve where a Portland-bound Amtrak train derailed earlier this week, killing three passengers and injuring dozens more.

Amtrak train 501 on Monday was making its inaugural trip on one of the Pacific Northwest’s most anticipated infrastructure upgrades to date when it flew off the tracks just south of Tacoma. The tragic incident came after years of planning and a series of test runs on the track.
