On-time late trains change up the scenery

No one ever expects a train to be on time. It’s just a fact. OK, so they don’t have birds flying into engines. They don’t experience computer glitches. They don’t run into trouble with connecting flights. If there are problems, they usually have to do with freight trains, which own most of the tracks and call most of the shots.

But sometimes, lo and behold, hand to God, a train does leave on time. Maybe even a minute early. Since the depot is a 20-minute drive away and the parking lot a 50-step walk away and you are a little too casual — and you are a minute (or five) late — you are the only one standing on the platform as you watch the Palmetto crawl away. When this happens, you think, “I can’t believe what just happened.”
