Establishing 79-mph passenger trains on a T-shaped network linking Toledo with Detroit and Ann Arbor would likely cost about $389.2 million, while a 110-mph operation would run to about $524 million, a consultant studying passenger trains’ potential told a Toledo City Council committee Tuesday afternoon.
But the infrastructure portion of such a project likely would be eligible for federal funding, Alexander Metcalf told the regional growth, development, and small business enterprise committee, and the private sector might be willing to chip in toward the trains’ price — particularly for the 110-mph version, which he said would likely turn an operating profit.
