Irish Rail is running out of room for new passengers on Dublin services.
The State transport company said that there would be no space for additional passengers on peak services around the capital by early 2021, unless dozens of additional carriages are ordered.
A massive surge in demand has led to overcrowding on morning and evening commuter routes, and Irish Rail said it had to order a new fleet by the end of this year – or risk having no additional capacity from early 2021.
