MARC threatened: Maryland demands payment or may stop services

MARTINSBURG — The state of Maryland wants anywhere from $3.2-$3.8 million a year to continue to operate the MARC commuter train into West Virginia, and if Maryland does not get a funding agreement soon, the service could be terminated this summer.

“Negotiations are underway,” state Sen. Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said Thursday in a telephone interview. “It would be premature to say where the negotiations are now. Funding is not built into the budget at this time. But we’re working to solve the problem. We’re committed to solving the problem.”
