Central Japan Railway Co. said it will equip all its bullet trains with tear gas canisters, protective vests and shields in response to a deadly knife rampage earlier this month.
The devices will be installed in a number of train cars for each service, along with first-aid equipment to staunch bleeding and attend to other injuries.
The incident that sparked the response occurred June 9 on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line as the Nozomi No. 265 was speeding between the stations of Shin-Yokohama and Odawara.
