On the eve of a federal election and after years of study, the Liberal government will announce Tuesday that the Canada Infrastructure Bank will play a role in Via Rail’s multibillion-dollar plan to build a new rail line exclusively for passengers through Quebec and Ontario.
Government sources, to whom The Globe and Mail granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed to The Globe that Tuesday’s announcements in Trois-Rivières, Que., and Peterborough, Ont., will reveal that the Canada Infrastructure Bank is supporting the ambitious project in the form of millions of dollars for additional study on how to “de-risk” the project.
