KETCHUM, IDAHO — Ketchum was originally an old west mining and ranching town. It still retains some of that history and charm. But in 1936 nearby Sun Valley was developed into America’s first destination ski resort, and it soon became a popular vacation spot for the rich and famous. Today, the luxury destination is more accessible to all. It features some of the steepest and best skiing in the country.
The Union Pacific Railroad was behind the building of the ski resort. Board of Directors member Averell Harriman wanted a place here to match skiing in the European Alps. As a result, not only does Sun Valley boast claims to being the first resort, but it became the first mountain to have a chairlift.
