The Fort Lauderdale City Commission voted 3-2 on May 1 to withdraw from the Wave streetcar project after the bids came in over budget.
The Wave was proposed as a 2.8-mile-long streetcar system with rails embedded in the street and overhead wires. Some residents objected to the design, while others felt that the route – mostly along Andrews Avenue – was not ideal. Many Fort Lauderdale business groups supported the Wave as a way to alleviate traffic in the fast-growing downtown area, and capitalize on new transit riders from the Brightline.
