The Trump administration is at odds with New York and New Jersey over how much federal support it will provide for a series of projects known as Gateway that include two new passenger rail tunnels under the Hudson River. The two existing tunnels are more than 100 years old, were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy and could fail at any time, stranding hundreds of thousands of commuters and crippling the region’s economy.
Although the administration does not dispute the economic importance of Gateway, it has refused to pay half the costs, a percentage the states claim was agreed to by the Obama administration. The Federal Transit Administration has made grants of 40% to 50% for transit projects in other cities and should do the same for Gateway.
