When Pennsylvania Railroad moved its headquarters from Broad Street to 30th Street Station upon its completion in 1935, the shift was seen as an attempt to move Philadelphia’s downtown to the west side of the Schuylkill.
It didn’t work. By the 1960s, the Pennsy was facing bankruptcy, and urban planners armed with bulldozers targeted West Philadelphia for urban renewal, literally paving the way for the University City Science Center.
