In these final weeks of the Christie administration, the governor is attempting to shore up his legacy, holding a recent press conference urging Democratic legislators to further reduce public employee health benefits. It’s a non-starter, which is an apt phrase for the state of the state’s transit agency.
Once a model for how to do it right, NJ Transit is now the poster child for how to do it wrong. The agency has been in a downward spiral since Christie made it clear that mass transit was not going to be his priority. He canceled the ARC tunnel project, which would have brought NJ Transit trains under the Hudson and into Manhattan through a new river tunnel and into a new station well below 34th Street.
