Closing, and reopening, the Gateway drawbridge

CLOSING THE DRAWBRIDGE: Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao engaged in combative exchanges with House Transportation Committee lawmakers from New York and New Jersey as they pressed her on the administration’s stance on the Gateway rail project at a hearing Tuesday. When asked about the veracity of news reports that President Donald Trump appealed to House Speaker Paul Ryan to withhold federal funds for the Gateway project, Chao said it was “probably true,” but that what she knew came from media reports, and when lawmakers continued to press she directed them to the White House for clarification.
