Chicago: Amid state budget stalemate, Metra’s labor costs rose 32 percent in effort to maintain aging equipment

The past few years have been good for Metra workers, particularly administrators.

Even as the state budget stalemate starved agencies of money, the commuter railroad grew its payroll by 32 percent in the past five years — a figure that reflects rising salaries, added headcount and increased overtime. It makes up an increasing share of the railroad’s overall budget.
