The first of 10 refurbished commuter rail locomotives, overhauled in a $30 million initiative by the MBTA, was unveiled Thursday in Somerville after a year of reconditioning, officials said.
MBTA general manager Steve Poftak said the car was originally built in 1987, but by 2017 it was one of the worst-performing cars. The MBTA spent about a year reconstructing the car and adding new safety equipment as part of the F40 Legacy Locomotive Program.
