More commuter rail trains broke down on the MBTA last year than any other transit system in the country — even though the T runs less than half the number of miles of its New York and New Jersey counterparts, according to stunning new federal data.
The 338 mechanical failures the T logged in 2016 eclipsed by far the next closest systems, in New Jersey and New York, according to the Federal Transit Administration report — reinforcing local complaints about an aging fleet of trains charged with carrying 121,000 riders daily.
