The MBTA’s beleaguered commuter rail line — recently deemed the most breakdown-prone in the U.S. — is delaying trains and leaving commuters in the lurch because it doesn’t have enough conductors to check tickets, even as crucial plans to overhaul many aging locomotives are already months behind.
“When you have very crowded trains, and you have not enough assistant conductors, instead of opening six doors on a train, you’re only opening three. So you can imagine that’s crowding people in and out,” said Dan Grabauskas, the T’s newly hired executive director of the commuter rail.
