Amtrak prepares for probe of deadly crashes

BEFORE THE STORM: Amtrak has a lot of explaining to do following a recent spate of deadly incidents, and NTSB is devoting two whole days next week to find out what went wrong. Ahead of that hearing, Amtrak chief safety officer Kenneth Hylander spoke to POLITICO about what the National Railroad Passenger Corporation is doing to improve safety. For one, it’s collecting more data and using that to inform decisions. It’s also making its own decisions, instead of taking freight railroads’ word when they say something’s safe, which means sometimes refusing to serve areas where conditions don’t meet specifications. Expect a lot more of that as Amtrak analyzes the places that lack positive train control — 1,400 miles across the country — and decides how (or whether) it can make them safe enough to meet criteria.
