FORT MADISON — Amtrak has shuttered its ticket window and eliminated the ticket agent position at the station here, making the station one of 18 stations to go digital-only this year, a railway spokesman said.
The Southwest Chief will continue to stop at the Fort Madison station, but since May 17, passengers with credit cards have been encouraged to purchase tickets online at Amtrak.com, using Amtrak’s free mobile apps, or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. Passengers must then print out their tickets at home or show them on a smartphone. For those wanting to pay in cash, tickets may be purchased on the train, but will be sold at the highest price and subject to availability.
