ALTON — A trackhoe began tearing away at the old Alton depot Monday, its falling bricks, wood and metal bringing back one woman’s memories of the station, which sparked her son’s deep fascination with trains.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” said Edie Chappell, 83, who with her husband, raised five children on nearby Jackson Street. “This meant a lot to all of us. We could feel the trains going through, we had a two-story house and it shook a little bit; we could feel the trains shake the house.”
