A harrowing prospect from Amtrak for commuters

WHO NEEDS A HOUSE OUT IN HACKENSACK? Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson raised a harrowing prospect for some commuters along the Northeast Corridor on Thursday: railroads like New Jersey Transit and MARC that run over Amtrak-owned lines may have to stay in park come Jan. 1 if their locomotives aren’t positive train control compliant. Anderson’s comments came during a House subcommittee hearing on the state of PTC implementation among freight and commuter railroads — most of which are expected to ask for up to two more years to meet the mandate, and some of which may not even qualify for that. Both NJ Transit and MARC occupy the bottom rungs of the ladder of 41 railroads required to have the technology in place.
