STB SHOWDOWN: Dozens of companies have signed up to testify at next month’s Surface Transportation Board hearing on freight railroad customer fees, called demurrage and accessorial charges. It’s a complicated issue, but to boil it down, shippers feel like they’ve been subjected to unfair additional charges and claim that railroads are using the extra revenue to “reward shareholders and impress Wall Street investors,” as the head of the the National Grain and Feed Association put it in a comment.
