The first glimmer of hope for a DeLand SunRail station in several years has emerged and, Volusia County Council members will be put on the spot Tuesday about whether to honor an earlier council’s commitment to it.

The 49-mile commuter rail line from DeBary to Poinciana was originally scheduled to be extended to DeLand, but the project ran into federal funding problems and has never been started. Now the Florida Department of Transportation has identified a federal funding mechanism that might shake loose money for the project, according to a July 12 letter from Nicola Liquori, SunRail’s chief executive officer, to Volusia County Chair Ed Kelley.
