Wilmington, North Carolina Wilmington rolls ahead with rail-realignment study

WILMINGTON — Calling it a potentially “transformative project” for Wilmington, city officials want the federal government to help get the wheels rolling on an ambitious proposal to relocate the freight rail line that runs through the heart of the Port City across the Cape Fear River.

City council Tuesday unanimously approved applying for a grant from the Federal Rail Administration to fund further engineering and environmental studies into the proposal, which supporters say would improve rail access to the Port of Wilmington and keep the city’s traffic from grinding to a halt when long freight trains snake their way through town.
