U.S., New York station in motion: On Penn redo and beyond, Amtrak must accept lessons from L-train tunnel renovation

Someone had better remind the folks planning the Empire Station Complex, a super-sized Penn Station, about Gov. Cuomo’s L-train revolution, because Amtrak is conning them. You remember that, when Cuomo and engineers from Columbia and Cornell “meddled,” proving that the Sandy-damaged East River tube could be fixed in place without closing it, saving time, money and a cascade of disruption.

While the naysayers naysayed, it was successful, so successful that the Sandy-damaged F-train tube will get the same quick fix. And the MTA is eager to do likewise for Amtrak’s Sandy-damaged East River tubes shared by the LIRR. It’s also the way to go for Amtrak’s Sandy-damaged Hudson tunnel, which a still-secret report from London Bridge Associates confirms.
