The Daily CSX: Florida CSX worker takes railroad to court

Alfred Odom, a 20-year CSX employee who developed a degenerative disc disease and bone spur in his spine, has joined the list of current and former employees suing the Jacksonville-based railroad for violating their federally protected medical leave.

Odom, a Duval County resident, took his claim to court July 17, alleging that his position, manager of customer experience, was eliminated days after he requested time off for surgery. His superior, Odom claims, told Odom that he was not in any more pain than other employees, tried to talk him out of getting surgery and told him “no one respects people who take FMLA,” referring to the Family and Medical Leave Act, a federal law that guarantees certain employees a set amount of leave without fear of job loss.
