MAILBAG: A broad group of railroads, truckers and shippers wrote to White House officials Thursday urging them not to impede cross-border rail or truck freight traffic. “The closure of the U.S.-Mexico border would jeopardize the economic growth our country has seen over the last 27 months and negatively impact American consumers and businesses,” they wrote.

UNIONS ON THE HILL: Fifty people from three railroad unions were on Capitol Hill Thursday give lawmakers a report on what they call a “hostile turn” in Amtrak’s labor relations. They also criticize Amtrak’s attempts to cut services, as well as the company’s move toward outsourcing service workers on trains, at a California call center, and in rural stations. “This change is detrimental not only to the employees, but to Amtrak’s service to the traveling public,” the report says.
