History, luxury and ‘steeps’ — Idaho’s Sun Valley Ski Resort has it all

KETCHUM, IDAHO — Ket­chum was originally an old west mining and ranching town. It still retains some of that history and charm. But in 1936 nearby Sun Valley was developed into Ameri­ca’s first destination ski re­sort, and it soon became a popular vacation spot for the rich and famous. Today, the luxury destination is more accessible to all. It features some of the steepest and best skiing in the country.

The Union Pacific Railroad was behind the building of the ski resort. Board of Di­rectors member Averell Har­riman wanted a place here to match skiing in the Euro­pean Alps. As a result, not only does Sun Valley boast claims to being the first re­sort, but it became the first mountain to have a chairlift.
