Complicated web leaves future of Ontario short-line rail unknown

Regulations are in place that prevents federally regulated rail lines from just ceasing operations.

Those provisions may or may not come into play if the short-line railway operated by Huron Central Railway ceases its lease agreement with CP Railway.

Canada’s Transportation Act Division 5 (transferring and discontinuing the operation of railway lines) sets up a process that must be followed before discontinuing operations.
