Boston: Transit system plagued by near-constant service issues

The MBTA has been plagued with delays, derailments and maintenance problems that have riders as well as municipal officials complaining about service. They include:

•  Nearly 30 derailments in the last three-plus years, the latest a Feb. 21 Red Line incident when a six-car train jumped the tracks during the morning commute, spraying passengers with shattered glass and spewing smoke as it entered South Boston’s Andrew Station.
