Amtrak says new focus on safety will make rail travel safer for all

Amtrak officials told federal ­investigators Wednesday that two recent fatal crashes had prompted an unprecedented focus on safety for the railroad.

The company said it has long had programs that encourage employees to report safety issues, had rules designed to protect workers and collected data to pinpoint weaknesses in its systems. But officials acknowledged there is room for improvement.
