Amtrak rolling out new food options in effort to counter ‘dumbed-down’ image

WASHINGTON — Rail enthusiasts of a certain age may remember the pre-Amtrak days when dining cars featured real silverware, cloth napkins and table cloths, and food more or less cooked to order.

And they may recoil at subsequent experiences on Amtrak trains, with lackluster airline-style food served on functional tables — with graciousness not available even as a side dish. An effort to replace hot meals on board the Lake Shore Limited serving Albany with cold boxed meals was roundly criticized by passengers.
